Interim Grace Notes for November 18, 2022

Stewardship Campaign Update

On Wednesday I sent a Stewardship Campaign Update Mailchimp message to the congregation which explained the distribution of our Stewardship Packets (including booklet and intent card) during worship and via US Mail. I hope you all received yours and if you are available for worship this weekend, will bring your completed form with you. At staff meeting we decided that we would empty the baptismal font, and have members bring their intent cards when they come forward for Holy Communion, and place the envelopes in the baptismal font. This seems to me like a good reminder that our financial gifts are a part of what it means to live in the covenant of our baptism. I am planning to increase my weekly offering intent, and hope that you do as well. I am hoping for 100% participation from congregational leadership -- Council and Call Committee, as well as increased participation from members.

Great Hymns of Faith Concert Was Inspiring

The Great Hymns of Faith program returned to in-person concert mode after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. Over 40 singers from several congregations joined their voices to present this year's concert, again under the direction of area music leadership professional Michael Shirtz. The concert lasted about 40 minutes, and included the Randall Thompson classic, "The Last Words of David" (I remember singing this anthem in college choir back in 1971-73!), an organ solo by Tom, a congregational Thanksgiving hymn "Come Ye Thankful People Come," and the well known gospel hymn "I Sing Because I'm Happy." The choir's performance was excellent, and we look forward to doing it again next year.

Update on Portraits and Picture Directory

Grace's own Dave Casperson, who photographed members of the congregation in October for a new picture directory, has delivered digital images of all the photography sessions to the church office. Heather Hawn, Grace's Youth Minister, will email you your images as attached files. Watch for an email message from Heather - heatherrhawn@gmail.com.

Once you have received your image files, you are free to make prints or post them to your social media accounts, as Dave has released the copyright at no cost to you. You may wish to pay Dave's generosity forward with a monetary gift to Grace, or send a thank you note to Dave at davec1403@yahoo.com

Those who do not have email addresses will be able to view and order pictures from Heather Hawn during several sessions at the church. You will find Heather

  • Saturday, November 19 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm in the Dining Room
  • Sunday, December 4 and December 11 immediately after both 7:45 and 10:00 am services in the Activities Office (Sunday School Hallway)
  • During the week by appointment by calling the church office at 419-332-1558

Heather will take your order and email your images to the photo print provider of your choice .

All the images of Grace members and families will be compiled into a directory, which we plan to make available in a pdf (digital) format, as well as a printed directory. We are not yet sure of the details of when these directories will be completed, or the cost, but we expect it to be done in early 2023.

If you have any questions, you can call the church office at 419-332-1558.

ELCA Youth Gathering Update

A new issue of GNews has been published - the official newsletter of the 2024 ELCA Youth Gathering scheduled for July 16-20, 2023. Learn how the gathering theme "Created to Be" was discerned, and other interesting stuff about next year's gathering, at which we hope a number of Grace and LIFT youth will be attending. You can read the latest issue HERE.

Conference Pastors

On Thursday morning, Eastern Conference Pastors meeting at Grace Lutheran Church in Castalia hosted members of St. Paul Lutheran Congregation in Sandusky. The occasion for this gathering was the impending closing of the congregation in a special service this weekend. The congregation sold their buildings and property last year to another congregation, and began worshiping in other available spaces in Sandusky, most recently The American Legion, where Sunday's service will be held. Since St. Paul has been a member congregation of the Eastern Conference, we felt that inviting them to come and tell us their stories of what St. Paul has meant to them would be a good thing.

Nineteen members of St. Paul's came to the gathering, and you can see a picture of the group gathered at Grace Castalia HERE. Many memories were shared, most notable about the decades-long ministry of a monthly meal that was served at no cost and to which the community was invited. Members also spoke of other outreach ministries early in the history of St. Paul, when the community was beginning to change culturally and racially. They were very appreciative of the opportunity to share this time of sadness in the closing of their congregation.

Bishop Daniel's November 14 email

Dear Friends in Christ,

“Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you” (Matthew 7:7).

Jesus asks a lot of questions. I once read that Jesus asks over 300 questions. Often Jesus answers a question with a question. What’s up with that? Why so many questions, Jesus? Is it because questions help us to pause and to ponder? Is it because questions help us dig just a bit deeper? Is it because questions have a way of leading us to a new place in a new way?

Late last week, I was looking for a blessing to offer at a prayer retreat. I didn’t find the blessing I was looking for, but I did find a series of questions by Father John O’Donohue. He calls his questions, A Mirror of Questions, to be asked in prayer at the end of the day. These are rich questions to pray and to ponder. Give these questions a try this week and see where your soul may be stirred and strengthened.

  • What dreams did I create last night?
  • Where did my eyes linger today?
  • Where was I blind?
  • Where was I hurt without anyone noticing?
  • What did I learn today?
  • What did I read?
  • What new thoughts visited me?
  • What differences did I notice in those closest to me?
  • Whom did I neglect?
  • Where did I neglect myself?
  • What did I begin today that might endure?
  • How were my conversations?
  • What did I do today for the poor and the excluded?
  • Did I remember the dead today?
  • When could I have exposed myself to the risk of something different?
  • Where did I allow myself to receive love?
  • With whom today did I feel most myself?
  • What reached me today? How did it imprint?
  • Who saw me today?
  • What visitations had I from the past and from the future?
  • What did I avoid today?
  • From the evidence – why was I given this day?

Interim Grace Notes for November 11, 2022

Thank You Veterans!

I'm not sure who receiving this is a veteran, but if any of you are, thank you for your faithful service to our great USA, on this day dedicated to you and every other day. Our recent election day and its still unfolding results are a reminder of the wonderful gift that is ours to vote, giving each of us a say in the future of our nation.

Stewardship Campaign Gathering This Sunday, 9:15 am

You've been hearing this announcement for several weeks now, and the day is Sunday, November 13, at 9:15 in the Dining Room. We are inviting Grace members who attend all three of our weekend services to come together this Sunday at 9:15 am for a simple breakfast of fresh bakery rolls/donuts and beverages, and to have a conversation around the dining room tables. This conversation will be directed by a "menu" of questions, which you can read HERE. Toward the end of the menu is the "Check, please!" section, which will include an overview of the Live Simply campaign booklet, which you can view HERE.

The Stewardship Team met this past Wednesday, and we assembled the packets that will be distributed to Grace members who are in attendance. Those attending Saturday 4:00 pm and Sunday 7:45 am will receive their packets before worship - those who will attend 10:00 am worship will receive their packets in the dining room at the beginning of our Gathering, and those attending 10:00 worship but not the Gathering will receive their packets before worship. All others will receive their packet via US Mail.

In our worship this weekend, we will highlight the fourth and final sub-theme, "Share Enough," in our overall Live Simply campaign theme, which will remind us that if we focus on the scarcity, we never have enough. When we focus on God’s abundant blessings, there is more than we can ever imagine. Our sub-them then asks the question: "Are we able to begin to see the blessings rather than the scarcity?"

On Wednesday we sent an email highlighting the Week 3 theme, "Act Together." In case you missed it, you can read it HERE. Be sure to check out the generosity story from Connie Amor that I read in worship last weekend and included in this week's email.

Special message to Council and Call Committee members: If you are available on Sunday, I'm inviting you to come to the gathering in the Dining Room at 9:15, and spread yourselves among the many tables - one Council member and one Call Committee member at each table would be ideal. Review the "menu" of questions posted above, and help to take the lead in inviting those at your table to respond to the questions.

Great Hymns of Faith

Tom and Mike have been busy with preparations for the Great Hymns of Faith that will be this Sunday at 4:00 pm at Grace. Rehearsals have been happening for several weeks in several locations, but the main rehearsals will be Saturday afternoon beginning at 10:00 am at Grace. A huge task for this event is moving the sections of portable stage from a basement storage up the stairs to the sanctuary. Tom has recruited the necessary help to get the job done. I tried lifting even one side of one of those sections, it it is out of my range. Blessings and thanks to those who will get the job done both ways. Just a reminder that the choir risers will be in place for weekend worship -- and we will work around it. It's not too late to share the flyer that is posted on Graces Facebook page -- you can find and share it HERE.

Symphony Tickets Getting Sold

Tricia has received plenty of calls and visits for ticket purchases and reservations. I personally have bought four tickets, but will only be using one. I understand that my tickets are in the reserved area, so they are good seats, unless you'd rather sit in the balcony. Let me know if you'd like one or more of those three tickets.

Interim Grace Notes for November 4, 2022

Saints to Be Named this Weekend

This weekend we will observe All Saints Sunday. We will remember and give thanks for "all the saints" in our lives, both living and those who have died, and specifically we will name the saints from Grace who have died since All Saints Sunday last year. A candle will be lit for each person named.

Stewardship Campaign in Week 3

In our worship this weekend, we will highlight the third sub-theme, "Act Together," in our overall Live Simply campaign theme, and ask the question: "Are we able to begin to see that God provides us with more than enough?" On Wednesday we sent an email highlighting the Week 2 theme, "Face the Truth." In case you missed it, you can read it HERE. Be sure to check out the generosity story from Connie Amor that I read in worship last weekend and included in this week's email.

The Stewardship Team met this past Wednesday, and we did the final edits for our Stewardship Campaign booklet, which will be distributed during next weekend's worship and at the Congregational Gathering in the Dining Room next Sunday, November 13, from 9:15 - 9:45 am. This gathering will be a simple continental breakfast, and will feature conversation around the tables about what Grace means to us, along with a review of the Stewardship Campaign booklet.

Special message to Council and Call Committee members: If you are available on Sunday the 13th, I'm inviting you to come to the gathering in the Dining Room, and spread yourselves among the many tables - one Council member and one Call Committee member at each table. I will provide some printed discussion questions that you can take the lead in responding to, and encourage others at your table to also respond. Once I know what the questions will be, I will email them to you prior to the event.

The Stewardship Team will be meeting to assemble the Stewardship Campaign packets, which will include the 12-page booklet, an "Intent Card," and an envelope to enclose the card in. Members will be asked to complete the cards and bring them to worship on the weekend of November 20, a subsequent service, or to mail them to the church office. If you'd like to a preview of the Campaign Booklet, you can read it HERE.

Worship Committee Notes

Worship Committee met this past Wednesday - our primary items of discussion included details around this weekend's All Saints service, and about Advent Services, which will be held at 6:30 pm on Wednesdays, November 30, December 7, and December 14, following supper in the Dining Room at 5:30 We reaffirmed that there will be just one service on Sunday, Christmas Day, and Sunday, New Year's Day. Christmas Eve services will be at 6:00 and 9:00 pm.

LIFT Advent Devotions

Pastor Paul is asking for volunteer submissions for an upcoming Advent Devotions Project, and is looking for a few more submissions from Grace. Looks like there are about six slots remaining. I hope copied his informational piece from an earlier issue of LIFT Notes:

LIFT will be compiling an Advent devotional resource called My Favorite Things: Advent Stories from LIFT. We are inviting members of LIFT congregations to submit a few paragraphs responding to one of the prompts below. We will create a booklet with a reflection for each day in the four weeks of Advent, and share a post each day on LIFT’s social media. We hope that this is both a chance for people in our congregations to get to know each other better as well as an opportunity for prayerful meditation in the weeks leading up to Christmas. For the 28 days, we are seeking four responses to each of these seven prompts:

  • My favorite Christmas carol is...
  • My favorite Biblical character is...
  • My favorite holiday memory is...
  • My favorite Christmas tradition is...
  • My favorite reminder of God’s love is...
  • My favorite Bible verse is...
  • My favorite gift given or received is...

Sign up for one of the themes HERE. Please send your finished submissions to Pastor Paul Bailie (bailiepaul@gmail.com) by November 13.
