Interim Grace Notes for June 24, 2022

A Baptism With a Global Mission Connection

On June 12, little Hudson Lieb received the sacrament of Holy Baptism at the 10:00 service. This baptism had an ELCA Global Mission Connection. I'll try to explain -- hope I have my facts correct. Little Hudson's mom is Cheryl Lieb, who is the daughter of David and Lisa Sachs. Lisa is the first cousin of Rev. Yoshitaka Franklin Ishida. Franklin's mother, Gloria Bauer Ishida, is from Clyde. Gloria was married for 58 years to Franklin's father, Rev. Dr. Yoshiro Ishida. Dr. Ishida was the former director of the Lutheran World Federation Department for Studies, and died on November 4, 2015, at the age of 87. You can read more about Dr. Ishida's distinguished ministry career in global mission HERE.

The Ishida name has for a long time been familiar to me, probably from various articles in Living Lutheran and predecessor publications, and more recently, Dr. Yoshira and Gloria's son Franklin Ishida's name has appeared occasionally in ELCA related Facebook groups such as ELCA Clergy. Franklin is an ELCA pastor called as program director for Asia Pacific with ELCA Global Mission. You can read several articles written by Rev. Ishida that appeared in Living Lutheran HERE.

After the service on June 12, I had a chance to visit with Hudson's family, including Lisa, who explained the connection with the Ishida family. I used that information to go on Facebook and send a message to Franklin, informing him that I had baptized his first cousin's grandchild. Franklin responded with this message:

Yes, Lisa and I are first cousins (and my mother is from Clyde). And what a wonderful day for Hudson’s baptism, on this feast of the Holy Trinity.

I myself preached at the English worship of a congregation of the Tamil Ev Luth Church in Chennai, India. You should try it sometime, at 6:30 am 😅 (though that means it’s cooler than the 100 degrees midday)

Tomorrow I head into the mountains in NE India near the Myanmar border to check on refugees from the civil war in Myanmar. Lutheran Disaster Response is providing assistance to some thousands of refugees there.

Peace and blessings!

I share this information because, too often, the reach and impact of our Mission Support offerings remains too unknown for not only our faithful members who give generously, but also for us as leaders. We should take every opportunity we have to learn more about the impact our Mission Support has in our synod, and through our national and global outreach ministries.

Dr. Jacqueline Bussie at Lakeside Lutheran Chautauqua

For the past 102 years, Lutherans have gathered for a week during the summer for a time of learning, fellowship, recreation, engaging the arts, and enjoying the beauty of Lake Erie. For all the summers I was at St. Peter in Norwalk, I accompanied our high school youth who stayed the week at Lakeside and took in all that Lakeside had to offer. An inportant part of our week was attending the Chaplain's Hour in Hoover Auditorium. During Lutheran Chautauqua week, the Lutherans recruited the speaker for the week, many known nationally.

This year's speaker was Dr. Jacqueline Bussie, formerly a religion professor at Capital University and Concordia College Moorhead, and recently installed as Executive Director at the Collegeville Institute, Collegeville, Minnesota. You can read all about Dr. Bussie and her role at Collegeville HERE.

Dr. Bussie spoke movingly about grief, love, and faith. One of her books that she spoke about writing and from which she quoted was Love Without Limits.

I attended Dr. Bussie's sessions beginning at 9:00 am from Monday through Friday. Next year's speaker will be Michael Adam Beck. Our synod has brought him to NW Ohio to lead sessions on Fresh Expressions, new ways for congregations to proclaim the gospel beyond the wall of the church. Possibly a place to bring Grace of LIFT youth next summer.

Council Installation

Don't forget that Congregation Council members will be installed at all three services this weekend. Will happen after the sermon and Hymn of the Day.

Four Youth Affirm Their Faith

Four Grace youth affirmed their baptismal faith in the Rite of Confirmation last Sunday at the 10:00 service. Our confirmands were Madi, KK, Brandon, and Jaidyn. Your view a photo of the group HERE. A planning meeting for the 2022-2023 program year has been scheduled for Wednesday, June 29. The program will be a bit smaller come fall, as there will be no youth from St. Mark participating. Since this is a LIFT ministry, Pastor Paul will continue as a leader/presenter, and the class session locations will be split between Grace and St. John.

New 75" LCD Screen Installed in Lounge

A new 75" LCD TV Screen has been installed in the Lounge. It has been mounted on the North side of the end of the room, and will replace the large cabinet that housed a small TV and DVD player. The TV, which was donated, is a smart TV, so that internet content is easily accessible and viewable.

Choose to Watch The Chosen!

A new adult Sunday School class will begin this Sunday which will focus on watching episodes of The Chosen. For those unfamiliar with The Chosen as a TV Series, here is an explanation from Wikipedia:

The Chosen is a television drama based on the life of Jesus of Nazareth, created, directed and co-written by American filmmaker Dallas Jenkins. It is the first multi-season series about the life of Jesus, and season one was the top crowd-funded TV series or film project of all time. The series' creators stated that they had hoped to distinguish the new series from previous portrayals of Jesus by crafting a multi-season, episode-based story. The series portrays Jesus "through the eyes of those who met him".

The sessions will meet in the lounge beginning at 9:00 am. Participants will watch a session, and then discuss, and dismiss in time for 10:00 worship.

Interim Grace Notes for June 3, 2022

LIFT Prayer Service

Last week Pastor Paul organized and publicized a prayer service to lament the tragic mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas. One of Pr. Paul's previous calls was to a community in Texas not far from Uvalde, so this tragedy was in a place familiar to him. The service was held on Tuesday evening at St. Mark, on the one week anniversary of the shootings that killed 19 school children and two teachers. Service elements including scripture readings prayers, hymns, and prayer stations that including lighting a candle, writing post card to a US Congressman, posting prayers on on easel, and doing a piece of artwork. There were about 40 people in attendance. Pastor Paul posted a picture on the LIFT Facebook page which you can view HERE.

Stewardship Storytelling Team Meets

The Stewardship Storytelling Team met Tuesday to review the content of the final Zoom meeting led by Mitzi from GSB Fundraising. This session dealt most with scheduling - we now have scheduled impact stories to be published monthly through the month of September. Do you have a story to tell of how God has changed your life? We'd love to have you tell your story so that we can share it with the congregation!

One Year Anniversary!

Wednesday, June 1 marked the one year of my first day at Grace as you interim pastor. The church office put together a little celebration with fresh donuts. Yum! Thanks, staff! The year went quickly and well! I'm thankful for the opportunity to serve at Grace!

Interim Pastors Zoom Meeting

On Thursday I joined a monthly Zoom meeting led by an interim ministry colleague in Minnesota, and publicized through a closed Facebook Group called Lutheran Interim Pastors (ELCA). This has been a helpful forum to ask questions and get and provide answers to those engaged in interim ministry.

Synod Assembly Day 1

The Northwestern Ohio Synod Assembly met for day 1 of the 2-day event today at BGSU. There were a total of about 300 persons in attendance. Grace was represented by Ed Muffler, Richard and Nelda Bauer, and yours truly. The main business of the day was the bishop election. Bishop Daniel Beaudoin easily won re-election to a second six-year term as bishop on the first ballot, which required a 75% margin for election, 216 of 260 legal votes, for an 83% margin. Other business included several memorials, resolutions, constitutional amendments, and some amendments to the 2023 Compensation Guidelines. Pastor Paul took photos at the assembly and posted them on the LIFT Website, which you can view HERE. The Assembly concludes Saturday with remaining business, more sessions of "Story Walk," a series stories today by synod members of how they have walked with Jesus. You can read more about our Story Walk sessions HERE.

All's Ready for Confirmation

The Rite of Confirmation will be a part of 10:00 Sunday worship this weekend. Four of our 8th graders, Jaidyn, Madison, Brandon, and Kayleen, will affirm their baptismal faith. Father in heaven, for Jesus sake, stir up in these young persons the gift of your Holy Spirit; confirm their faith, guide their lives, empower them in their serving, give them patience in suffering, and bring them to everlasting life. Confirmands and parents will be welcomed in the Dining Room for breakfast at 9:00 am.
